In the quiet depths of India's freshwater ponds lies an untapped treasure, pearls that shimmer with promise, not just in beauty, but in profit. Freshwater pearl farming, also known as inland pearl culture, is an emerging non-conventional aquaculture practice in India. It involves cultivation of artificially reared pearls inside freshwater mussels under controlled conditions. Unlike natural pearls, which are formed by chance, deep inside the oceans, cultured pearls are deliberately introduced using modern surgical techniques.

In India, states like Bihar, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu are increasingly  becoming hotspots for freshwater pearl farming, due to their abundance of freshwater bodies and favourable climatic conditions. From understanding the science behind pearl culture to uncovering the booming domestic and export markets, this upcoming article serves as a complete guide for aspiring pearlpreneurs.

2. MARKET DEMAND FOR THE GLOWING GLEAM OF PEARLS:

i) Jewelry & Luxury Sector: Millennials and Gen Z are embracing pearls for their minimalist and sustainable appeal, often preferring baroque or non-traditional styles over classic strand.Major fashion houses (e.g. Chanel, Dior, Mikimoto) regularly feature pearls in high fashion and runway collections.

ii) Market Growth: Global Pearl Market Value (2024) is around $13–15 billion USD and projected CAGR is about 10–12% from 2024–2030, especially in Asia-Pacific and North America.

iii) Sustainability & Cultured Pearls: Consumers are increasingly interested in ethically sourced and sustainable pearls. Cultured pearls dominate the market due to lower cost and environmental considerations. Innovations in pearl farming (in China and Japan) are helping meet growing demand sustainably.

iv) Beauty & Wellness Markets: Pearl Powder is trending in skincare and cosmetics for its supposed anti-aging and brightening properties. Pearl powder is of high demand in Asia (especially China, South Korea, Japan) where it is used in luxury creams, supplements and traditional medicine.

v) Regional Demand: Asia-Pacific region dominates the pearl market (especially China, Japan, India). North America & Europe show strong demand in luxury fashion, bridal jewelry and emerging in wellness. Middle East has a high-value market for South Sea and Tahitian pearls.

3. STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE: FROM MUSSEL TO MARVEL

i) Site selection and Mussel Collection:

• Choose a pollution-free freshwater pond or tank. You can start with 10*15 ft  pond, enough to accomodate 1000 mussels.

• Ensure that water conditions in your area are suitable for pearl farming. Local climate & water quality should support mussel growth.

• Procure high-quality freshwater mussels (Lamellidens marginals or Parreysia corrugata) from rivers or lakes, that are 2.5 - 3 inches in size with golden outer shell, in order to obtain better pearl quality.

• About 10% losses are estimated during transportation of mussels. So, keep them in wet jute sacks. It takes about 2-3 days for transportation. Thus, sprinkling water on the jute sacks, would prevent them from drying up.

ii) Maintain temperature & pH:

• The pH of the water should be between 7.5 - 8 and temperature between 25-32°C, for optimal mussel growth.

• Maintain zero ammonia levels in pond. This can be achieved by deploying motors of water coolers that rotate water in the pond. Use the motor for 2-3 hours daily.

• Keep mussels in clean ponds for 10-15 days

• Create river-like ecosystem for mussels to thrive. To ensure this, introduce algae into the pond, as it's the primary food source for mussels.

• During summer, when temperature rises, regulate heat by installing green shade.

iii) Nucleation (Surgical Implantation):

• Minor surgery is performed to implant either plain or designed pears (artificial nuclei) into the tissue of mussel.

• This is achieved by implanting a small spherical bead and a piece of mantle tissue into the mussel's gonad or mantle lobe.

• Mussels are then stitched and placed back in small recovery tanks for 2-3 days before shifting to a larger pond

iv) Mussel feeding & care:

• Place mussels in a separate suspended net cages or trays in pond

• Add algae monthly and maintain adequate oxygen levels in pond for survival of mussels. Use high-quality algae and provide necessary vitamins and minerals to influence pearl quality

• Mortalities of mussels usually range from 30-40% post operation.

• It takes about 12-18 months for pearls to develop. During this period, keep the cages clean and monitor for predator and diseases.

• Moreover, develop feeding protocols based on mussel quality, as this impacts growth and pearl extraction timelines.

v) Pearl harvesting and grading:

• Pearl harvesting to be done carefully by opening the mussel shells to harvest pearls

• Grade the cultured pearls based on lustre, size, colour and surface finish

• A typical pearl size ranges from 5-12 mm

• After harvesting pearls, mussel shell wastes can be turned into handicrafts items to earn additional income.

4. THE SURGICAL TRANSFORMATION

Several steps are involved in the surgical procedure to stimulate pearl production in mussels:

i) Mantle Cavity Implantation:

This process is also known as “Design pearls” or “mabe pearls”

Procedure: Insert a 4-6mm bead into the mantle cavity after opening the mussel’s valves.

Output: Produce half-round Pearls

ii) Mantle Tissue Implantation:

Procedure : Insert 2*2mm grafts (mantle tissue from a donor mussel) into small pockets in the recipients mantle .

Types :

Non-nucleated: Only graft tissue used , yields irregular shaped pearls .

Nucleated: Graft +2mm nucleus used, yields small round pearls.

iii) Gonadal implantation:

Procedure : Insert a graft and 2-4mm nucleus into an incision in the gonad , ensuring contact with the epithelial layer without damaging the instestine .

Output: Produce high quality round pearls.

5. MARKETING MASTERPLAN: TURNING PEARLS INTO PROFIT

Several strategies that can be followed to enhance the pearl farming business in India :

i) Understand cultivation economics :

Nurturing a mussel cost around ₹35-50 in India and can be sold at a rate of ₹150-₹1500 which can deliver a return of 50%-300% per cycle.

ii) Acquire technical skills:

Get training from institutions like CIFA (Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture) in Odisha, ICAR or NFDB covering grafting, maintenance and harvesting techniques.

iii) Management of environmental conditions:

Maintain an ideal pH of 7.5-8 and temperature of 25-32 degree celsius with clean, aerated water and a good supply of algae. Routine checks can reduce disease and improve yield.

iv) Structure farm setup thoroughly:

Use ponds, tanks or cages in clean , nutrient rich water. Avoid overcrowding. It's recommended to start with 1000 mussels in a 10*15 ft pond.

v) Marketing and selling channels:

Local jewellers and Artisans:

Partner with local jewellers, designers, boutiques. Offer bulk raw pearls or polished gems.
